Split Region is situated in the middle of Dalmatia. Characteristics of this Region, as in whole of Dalmatia, is stone building, as Dalmatia abounds in stone. In the past, everything was built out of stone - houses, streets, churches and palaces. Most famous palace is the Diocletian"s Palace in Split, where Emperor himself withdrew in 303 A.D. As a town, Split started to grow exactly out of that Palace, in which citizens, during the past, found shelter behind strong walls from enemies. The Diocletian"s Palace is registered as UNESCO"s World Heritage Monument. Today, Split is trading, transit and cultural centre of the whole of Dalmatia. Another famous monument of Dalmatian stonework is the portal of the Trogir Cathedral, made in the 12th century by master sculptor Radovan. Other tourist mainland destinations in Dalmatia are: Trogir, Omiš, Makarska, Tučepi. Makarska Riviera has the nicest pebbly beaches, Nature Park, mountain Biokovo, which gives to Riviera almost Alpine aspect. The largest islands are the island of Brač, with a famous Zlatni Rat (Golden Cape) beach north of Bol. The island of Hvar is Croatia"s most sunniest island, with long history of tourism tradition, and proud of one of the oldest theatres in the world. Other larger islands are Šolta and Vis. |
