Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, the Mediterranean and Central European country, which mainland measures 56.538 km2. Croatia has around 4,4 millions inhabitants while Zagreb has the population of 780.000 and lies along the Sava river which divides is into two parts: new Zagreb and the old town. It has a mils continental climate, due to its home mountain Medvednica (1035 m), which protects the town from cold northern winds. Zagreb is the old Central European city. It has been developing for centuries as the rich cultural, scientific and strong commercial and economical centre. The city has a good geographical position, lying at the crossroad of important roads between the Mediterranean coast and the Central Europe. When Croatia became independent in 1991, Zagreb became the capital, the political and administrative centre of the Republic of Croatia. Zagreb is also the business and University centre, the city of culture, art and entertainment. many famous scientists, artist and athletes come from the city. Tourists may enjoy the baroque style of the Upper city, the picturesque market place, the diversity of products in stores and tasteful home cooking. It is the city of green parks and promenades with many options taking the tours in the surroundings.
